Notifications & Event Pass
The mobile app delivers push notifications for event updates and provides an in-app event pass for check-in.
hey ema mobile app > Settings and My Pass
Manage notification permissions from app settings and open My Pass when you need your event QR code.
Push Notifications
The app uses Expo push notifications to deliver time-sensitive alerts. Notifications are best for:
- schedule changes or room reassignments
- meeting reminders
- session check-in reminders — if you favorite a session, a Session Starting Soon push arrives about 15 minutes before it starts
- important event announcements
- attendee engagement prompts
Notification permissions are requested on first launch. Users can manage notification preferences in the app settings.
Rollout Advice
- only send high-value notifications — frequent low-value alerts lead to opt-outs
- coordinate notification timing with email, SMS, and onsite messaging
- test notification delivery before attendee launch communications go out
- The message is time-sensitive and useful onsite.
- The target audience is correct.
- Staff know about the announcement before attendees receive it.
- The same information is reflected on signage, email, or help desk notes if needed.
Event Pass (My Pass)
The mobile app includes a "My Pass" screen that displays the attendee's event pass with a QR code for check-in, once their registration is confirmed.
How It Works
- Open My Pass from the home screen.
- Your event pass appears with your name, registration type, event dates, venue, and a QR code.
- Present the QR code at registration or session check-in points.
If your event team has enabled wallet passes for this event, the My Pass screen also offers Add to Apple Wallet (iOS) and Add to Google Wallet (Android) buttons. Tapping one generates a real wallet pass and opens your device's wallet app so you can add it — after that, the pass is available from your phone's own wallet app, not just inside hey ema. If wallet passes are not enabled for the event, only the in-app QR code is available.
Ask attendees to open My Pass from the app on event day rather than using old screenshots or forwarded emails. This helps check-in staff scan the right code.
Operational Guidance
- verify pass generation works with test accounts before go-live, for both the in-app QR code and, if enabled, Apple/Google Wallet
- ensure check-in staff know to scan the QR code from the app screen or from the attendee's wallet pass
- passes require an active network connection to generate; once generated, the QR code displays from cached data
